Oakland Housing Affordability Policy Needs Jobs Plan

Oakland Housing Affordability Policy Needs Jobs Plan - Video

Oakland Housing Affordability Policy Needs Jobs Plan On Wednesday, September 30th 2015, the Oakland City Council held a special hearing on the growing housing affordability problem in our city. There were many speakers and ideas tossed around and the government body agreed to take action of some kind. The next day came emails from several Councilmembers outlining policy ideas they said they would send to council: better enforcement of local real estate laws, upgraded staff to deal with bad landlords, and so on. Everything dealing with housing but nothing helping to improve the stock of good jobs for low skilled workers. The Oakland City Council has to focus on jobs and the creation of manufacturing employment opportunities. Not one Councilmember has ran for office on a jobs platform. Not one. Jobs brought blacks to Oakland during World War II. Lack of jobs blacks and Latinos normally have gotten in manufacturing have caused high rates of unemployment and outmigration. Nothing has been done. Oakland must adopt a jobs plan. Right now the message seems to be that the City wants jobs that whites can get easiest: tech jobs. Does Oakland want to become the next San Francisco? Sure seems that way. Let's stop that.
